Tuesday 27th March saw schools from around Greater Manchester competing in the Winter event of the Greater Manchester School Games. The day saw around 1700 young athletes battle it out to be crowned winners of their event. The opening ceremony took place at Sport City hosted by Alex James and Michelle Livesey from Key103 with guest stars Rizzle Kicks and Kirsty Mackay (Great Britain Hockey player) who helped to open the games.
As usual our representative schools from around Tameside did us proud with a grand total of 15 medals and counting! Here’s a list of the results for Tameside:

Year 5/6 Tag Rugby: Stalyhill Primary School– 3rd place
Under 16 Tag Rugby: Samuel Laycock Secondary – 1st place
Year 4/5 Swimming: St Marys RC, Denton – 8th place
Under 13 boys Table Tennis: Droylsden Academy – 6th place
Under 13 girls Table Tennis: Fairfield High School for Girls – 1st and 3rd place
Under 15 boys Volleyball: Alder Community College – 3rd place
Under 15 girls Volleyball: Fairfield High School for Girls – 1st place
Emma Heap, School Sport Partnership Development Manager at New Charter Academy said: “It looks like Tameside have finished top of the medals table for the Greater Manchester School Games which is a fantastic achievement. A massive congratulations has to be said to all that represented Tameside and a big thank you to all who attended and helped the day to run smoothly!”
Deputy Major Councillor Joe Kitchen attended the opening ceremony and a tour of all the sporting venues said: “What a phenomenal event to be invited to. With the London 2012 Games around the corner this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I am so proud to see 170 children representing Tameside schools here today.”
Head of Sport and Recreation Councillor Dawson Lane added “It was amazing to see so many of our schools represented in a Level 3 School Games event. All children enjoyed themselves thoroughly and competed at the world class sport venues that Greater Manchester has to offer. It was inspirational to watch!”
A great day was had by all and a big congratulations goes to all who competed in the games and the School Games Crew members from New Charter Academy, Denton Community College, Ashton Sixth Form and Adenshaw who did an amazing job of helping the day run smoothly! We hope everyone enjoyed their day and well done!
