Tameside Elite Athletes Summer progress

For those who haven't realised , we have some good quality up and coming athletes in Tameside Schools. You can check out their profiles on UKA Power of Ten.

On the very first weekend of the Summer holidays Jack Crabtree from West Hill was in action, this time at the BMC Gold series-Solihull,running with Senior athletes. His time of 3.52 broke the age group record at the time for the 1500m (its since been improved by Matt Shirling of Liverpool and the two remain in the top four in the UKrankings for u17) Jack has also done 1.54 for 800m-10th UK and 8.26 for 3000m putting him 2nd in the UK.Zak Miller (WEST HILL) has done 8,49 (4th in the north and 10th Uk)

Completing the trio from West Hill is Pole Vaulter David Campbell who won the North of England title in August and won a medal in the NATYAL Finals. His PB is 4.10m

West Hill are becoming reknowned for pole vaulting following ex pupil Andu Sutcliffe winning the u23 title.

Audenshaw High pupil Denver Morrison Massey competed in a relay in the u20 NJAL Final at Derby against Olympian Adam Gemili for Sale Harriers. He has another three years left in this age group but what an introduction to u20 Athletics after he won Gold in the NATAYL Finals 400m the week before. His pb for 400m 50.30 puts him 2nd in the North West in his age group.

Finally Megan McHugh (Fairfield) another Sale Harrier, won the girls u13 High Jump at the NATYAL Finals edging out her Southern opponents following disapointment in the hurdles having come 4th.

All these performances have been against top of the age groups in the country and we congratulate them and their schools. However its no good being a champion at 14 and retiring at 16 , so lets hope they stick at it and develop their Athletic careers further.

The beauty of Athletics s there is something for every shape and size.If you are slim and tall High Jump beckons, broad and stocky - Shot Putt, etc.Gymnast who has grown a bit too tall- pole vault. Then find a club where you train regularly.East Cheshire,Sale(at Sport City),Trafford and Stockport are all good clubs close to Tameside schools.

The problem for staff is the Athletics season falls in exam time when school is opften disrupted and even in new build schools, despite promises,PE still loses facilities to exam halls for weeks on end.In a wet Summer this is disastrous. This is why good school club links are important.Join them now for the cross country season or go to Sport City for Indoor Winter training.
